TAILORing Phage Therapy for the Gut and Beyond

Thank you all for attending! Here is the Capsid & Tail September PHAVES Recap
The gastrointestinal tract is a complex environment. Multidrug-resistant bacteria reside in our gut creating difficult to treat reservoirs of antibiotic resistant pathogens. Our work has led us to understand a major barrier phage have to overcome in order to infect and kill in the gut—the mucus layer. By utilizing gut-specific phages that can overcome this barrier we can potentially remove these bacterial reservoirs to prevent infections.
Due to the need we saw in the community our group has worked to create a service center at Baylor College of Medicine, TAILΦR (Tailored Antibacterials and Innovative Laboratories for phage (Φ) Research), that develops phage therapy treatments for patients with challenging antibiotic resistance infections. We want to spread the word about TAILΦR and potentially connect with phage researchers to create a community where we can work together to save lives.

Sabrina Green has recently defended her thesis in Dr. Anthony Maresso’s lab in the department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Her early research was on the pathogenesis of Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC). Now she works to develop phage therapy to prevent gut-derived infections caused by ExPEC. She is currently the microbiome lead, social media lead and advisor for TAILΦR.
